Advent Day 8: An Amazing Grace

"Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

Genesis 28:15

Jacob gazed in awe at the vision of a ladder to heaven that the Lord put before him. The Lord chose Jacob to fulfill his promise to Abraham, “Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth…in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth will be blessed.” God promised Jacob the land he slept on for the nation that would spring from his descendants.

With our human standards, we assume God chooses the deserving to extend his promises and blessings. But Jacob was far from deserving. He was a liar and a swindler who deceived his aging father and stole his brother’s birthright. He didn’t even follow God. We know this because when God approaches Jacob, he identifies himself as “the God of your father Isaac and your grandfather Abraham.” The Lord was not his God…yet. God chose Jacob before Jacob chose to follow God.

“I will not leave you until I have done what I promised,” God told Jacob. This is amazing grace. God never told Jacob,” I will leave you if you disobey me.” Instead, God’s actions were based solely on HIS faithfulness, not on Jacob’s.

God gives us a glimpse of how entering his Kingdom works. He does not call us to ascend the ladder. Instead, he descended the ladder to come to us. He took on human flesh and humbled himself as a tiny, helpless baby. All we can do is offer our empty hands and accept him into our embrace.

I wanted to make a ladder as a symbol of Jacob's vision and Jesus coming down from Heaven to us. I made this from a fallen branch I found in my back yard and jute string.
