"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
Not much is known about Joseph, Jesus' adoptive father, but scripture tells us he was a man who feared the Lord. He was a man of compassion, planning to divorce Mary quietly when he found out she was pregnant. He did not want to shame her, or worse, cause her to be stoned to death per adultery laws.
As soon as Gabriel told him the truth about Mary's baby, Joseph obeyed God with no question. He chose to trust God when circumstances didn't seem to make sense.
What strikes me most about this passage is that Joseph is one of the first people to place his faith in Jesus. "You shall call his name Jesus for he will save his people from their sins." Joseph believed and so he obeyed.
Immanuel, as we await your return, help us to be like Joseph-to trust you when circumstances don't make sense, to obey you when there is no glory.
For Joseph's ornament, I found a saw and hammer charms because he was a carpenter.
